The Winter Knockout Competition Final 24.01.2012

On a beautifully sunny day, the final of the Winter Knockout Competition took place between Sandra Edwards and Martin Cooke.

It was a hard fought competition with neither person gaining more than a one hole advantage over the early holes.

At the turn, honours were equal and it would have been impossible to predict an eventual winner.

Martin took a one hole advantage at the 13th and after halving the 14th with Sandra he went 2 holes ahead with a birdie at the 15th.

A half at the 16th. Meant that Martin was 2 holes up with 2 to play. A superb drive by Sandra on the 17th. finished no more than 18 inches from the hole and she converted the putt for a birdie to reduce the deficit to one hole down with one to play.

At the 18th. both players stayed on the fairway approaching the green and Sandra retained her composure and won the hole.

And so to the sudden death playoff down the 1st.  Good drives from both players set the match up for an exciting finish. Sandra’s second shot finished on the green and Martin’s on the fringe. A good chip by Martin left him some 9 inches from the pin which he converted for a par, whereas Sandra took three putts to finish with a bogie 5.

An excellent contest won by Martin Cooke but enjoyed by both finalists. Hopefully this will be the start of an annual knockout competition.
