September Monthly Medal report

A heavy downpour on Thursday and Friday resulted in holes 4 through 12 being closed for the competition. This resulted in a par 70 course of playing 1-3 and 13-18 twice. Eight members tackled this course, frequently pausing to admire the ground staff using a "sand agitator" to reconstitute the sodden bunkers. The much-needed rainfall presented greener fairways than have been seen for some time and a rather busier course with visitors confined to playing the nine open holes.

1. Andrew Markham 74-7 = 67
2. Sandra Edwards 91-18 = 73
3. Tony Cordingley 85-11 = 74

Tony winning on lower handicap from Frank Varey and Ali Mahmud
Twos scored by Tony on the 14th and Brian Couper on the 2nd

This report has been submitted by Andrew Markham in an e mail to me. I have simply copied and pasted his E mail  The opinions are Andrews and not necessarily those of your Web Administrator

Some results for you , all Stablefords. Low entries owing to the number of members actually resident during August and no doubt the high temperatures keeping a few indoors. The course is in decent condition, the fairways actually greener than my last e-mail . We had two temporary greens on Monday last owing to the staff spiking and treating the greens. As previously stated, in my opinion, I would doubt very much that the course will close owing to :

1. The ownership would have no saleable asset

2. The land could not be used for building even if any development is thought likely - count the number of building developments which are standing idle

3. Mojacar council presumably see the golf course as an asset when they granted planning permission. I was also on the course last Friday and it was comparatively busy. This August has generally been less active than last year with the number of people on holiday.

13 August

A. Markham     37
B. Mathew        35
F. Varey           32

20 August

T. Cordingly     42
F. Varey 36
S. Edwards 32
Sandra a two on the 17th

27 August

F. Varey 35
P. Edwards 34
A. Markham 32
Frank a two on the 2nd temporary green

Tony had his round of the year the 20th. In general the greens are good putting surfaces, as possibly indicated by the scoring.

 Monday 6 August

This report has been submitted by Andrew Markham.

A reduced entry with members on holiday or enjoying a local fiesta resulted in one division. The greens are in good condition, although some fairways are resembling links courses as we remembered them. Play was further tested by an increasingly strengthening wind, 14, 15 and 18 being tough holes to face at the end of the round.

Andrew Markham hung on despite a Jim Furyk-like meltdown on 13, scoring 7. A determined finish of 4,4,5,4,5 saw him home with 80-7=net 73 ahead of Frank Varey 88-12 = net 76 with Brian Couper taking third with 97-16 = net 81.

No twos were recorded

With the course in really good condition and the weather warm, with little wind, it promised to be an excellent day for golf.  However, with Sandra wearing her purple skirt (with matching pants) it hardly turned out to be her ´purple patch´,  returning a net 83 to take 3rd place for the Ladies.

Alan Humphries arranged a very enjoyable stableford for our team competition and it was good to see so many visitors present. Part of the course was closed as a result of the recent rains but this did not dampen the spirits.   Well done to Frank Varey who thought he might have lost his ball after his drive on the 14th only to find it in the hole! Frank’s only comment was that it had taken a long time to get his first “hole in one”!

The final results were:

1st  Frank Varey, Bill Gill, Geoff Owen and Margaret Budd 109 points

2nd  Colin Padfield, Brian Couper, Mark Davies and Val Cooke103 points

Club championship

Possibly, the most prestigious competition of the year was played over 36 holes on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 March. The competition  was based on both the gross and net scores over the two days.

Conditions were perfect and some excellent golf was played.  In particular, Rosalie Fardon, who has been looking to have her handicap reduced, produced a net score that resulted in a cut  of 4 strokes.  Well done to all our winners.

The final results were:

Alan Humphries with a gross 169

Winner of the net Competition playing off a handicap of 17:

A most enjoyable team competition was organised by Val Cooke and Frank Varey. This was a waltz (1 to score then 2 to score and then 3 to score) with the added bonus that players could elect in advance,to play their “joker” and get double points on one hole. As a result the winning team scored 16 points on the 8th hole with only two scores counting. We think this must be a record!

The final results were:

Monday 6 February

A somewhat reduced field took part in the monthly medal. The gentlemen played from the white tees and the ladies from the red tees.  Although the net scores were above par for the course, they were an improvement on last month’s white tee medal.  This can only mean that we are beginning to get the measure of our local course.

Ladies

1st Margaret Budd Net 78

2nd Maxine Mayhew Net 80

3rd June Humphries Net 81

Gentlemen

1st Alan Humphries Net 74

Thursday 9 February

A large field of members and guests played a Texas Scramble organised by Tony King. As we set off in a very chill wind, some competitors were heard to compare the weather in the UK with the conditions on this particular day.  Nevertheless, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the warmth of the clubhouse on our return was most welcome.

The results were:

1st  Alan Humphries, Brian Couper and Linda King with a net 64.8

3rd  Jim Budd, Steve Entwistle (guest) and Maxine Mayhew with a net 65.8

Monday 30 January

The weather had taken its toll when the members set off for a stableford competition with the gentlemen playing off the yellow tees.  Holes 4 and 5 were still flooded and as a result, only 16 holes were played and the competition became non qualifying for handicap purposes.

Thursday 2 February

A 3 ball stableford was arranged by Jim Budd for our team competition.  The format was two out of the three scores to count on odd numbered holes and all three scores to count on even numbered holes.

Soon after starting, the rains came and the less enthusiastic members decided to retire gracefully to the shelter of the club house.  As a result only 4 teams finished and they all shared in the prizes to recognise their fortitude.

The results were:

1st  Jim Budd, Maxine Mayhew, Bill Gill

2nd  Frank Varey, June Humphries, Steve Entwistle (Guest)

3rd  Brian Mayhew, Margaret Budd, Geoff Owen
